By M J H Simmonds

It is June 1884, a grey period for both the weather and Sherlock Holmes’ mood. A lack of compelling cases has left him bored and close once again to the dull embrace of the needle. Less than a month earlier, however, he had astonished Inspector Lestrade and everyone around him by solving no less than six crimes in consecutive days.

At the eleventh hour, Inspector Gregson arrives, with the promise of an impossible crime to solve. A murder has shattered the bucolic peace of the sleepy arable farmlands of Bedfordshire. The owner of a small stately home has been brutally killed while hosting a dinner party. But what and where is the murder weapon?

What follows is an epic, sweeping tale. From England to Africa, from poverty to wealth, the story spans decades. Hardship and friendship are followed by betrayal, deception and murder.

"The great sleuth is back! Soaring, swooping, epic. Baffling crimes, ingenious cold deduction, masterfully drawn creative and destructive tensions in 221B Baker Street and London’s squalid slums. Astride it all, Holmes is magisterial. THE ADVENTURE OF THE PIGTAIL TWIST has it all. This is vintage Holmes: intensely atmospheric and fiendishly clever. It’s authentic to a tee. I couldn’t put it down. A real delight. "
Dominic Selwood (Bestselling author of 'The Sword of Moses' & 'The Apocalypse Fire')

In Matthew Simmonds’ first novel, “Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Pigtail Twist”, Our Heroes are summoned to the murder of a wealthy man, found in a room of his home, and killed in a way that puzzles Sherlock Holmes right to the end of the book.

But before that, the book has a quite extensive prologue of sorts, in which Holmes agrees to solve a series of cases, one every day, for Scotland Yard. These are essentially short stories, built into the fabric of the larger narrative. (Additionally, there is a similar short story nearer the end of the book, told by Holmes to Watson while passing the time, about one of his earlier cases.) These aren’t intended to be filler in any way. Rather, they make for a more rounded and enjoyable book, illustrating that Holmes and Watson’s adventures weren’t simply stand-alone segments that were quite isolated and defined from other events going on at the same time.

The main investigation, however, is the meat of the book, and Holmes’s solution was quite satisfactory. I particularly enjoyed how he outplayed the criminal during a pursuit to the Continent.

Mr. Simmonds has other works in progress, and I for one will be looking forward to his next efforts. He has successfully found a way to retrieve the types of stories from Watson’s Tin Dispatch Box that I want to read and will support, and I encourage him to keep doing it for a long time!
